How to prepare for surgery and speed up recovery?

Surgical tooth extraction is a serious and complex operation. And as with any surgical intervention, discomfort is inevitable. Following some guidelines will help speed up the healing process.

Before extraction

  • It is better if the operation is scheduled for the morning (or at dinnertime up to 3-4 p.m.). In this case, the body endures stress easier, and postoperative pain will not interfere with night sleep.
  • Eat well 1.5-2 hours before the visit to the clinic. Excessive secretion of salivary glands can complicate the work of a dental surgeon;
  • On the day of surgery, you need to neglect alcohol and smoking — because of this, the risk of edema and prolonged bleeding increases.
  • In case of strong excitement, you can take mild sedatives in advance, or ask your dentist for them.
  • Sometimes we even ask the patient to perform professional hygiene of the oral cavity prior to the surgery. In some cases, therapeutic treatment is required, otherwise the healing process will take a long time.

After extraction

  • In order to reduce swelling, in the first hours after surgery, apply an ice pack to the cheek through a layer of cloth or tissue, no more than 10-15 minutes at a time.
  • Do not eat after surgery for 2-3 hours. Or even better, after anesthesia is completely gone
  • Do not rinse your mouth on the first day.
  • It is advisable to avoid flying by plane for the first 24 hours.
  • Limit your activity for the first 1-3 days. It is important not to do anything that will raise your blood pressure, as this can lead to further bleeding.
  • During sleep, use extra pillows to raise your head. Too flat position can allow blood to accumulate in the mouth and prolong the healing time.
  • Do not smoke, do not use drinking straws, and do not spit saliva. These actions can cause premature removal of the blood clot from the socket.
  • During the entire healing process, it is necessary to eat/drink only soft and not hot food and drinks, exclude from the diet spicy, salty, sour and sweet products.
  • Rinse your mouth with a solution of sea salt, starting in 24 hours after surgery.
  • Do not drink alcohol, it can lead to bleeding from the socket.
  • Avoid hot baths, saunas, swimming pools.
  • It is recommended not to touch the damaged socket by the tongue, and chew food on the opposite side of the removed tooth.
